Kavita’s passion for dance began with an interesting anecdote when she was just 4 years old. Kavita’s parents took her to the movie ‘Sagarasangamam’, one of India’s most noted dance movies. While actor Kamal Hassan displayed his whole repertoire of dance moves on screen, little Kavita broke into her own dance rhythm in the theatre and gyrated joyfully to the music on screen catching the attention of the audience in the theatre! Her parents knew then that there was a spark for dance in their little daughter. They decided to nurture this talent and so started Kavita onto formal dance education when she turned 7. There was no looking back since then.
Kavita took to dance like a fish takes to water. She took her first steps in the world of dance by getting a solid grounding in the classical dances Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Over the next 7 years, she excelled in both these dance forms regularly winning dance competitions all over India.
Being a good student, she managed to establish a good balance between her academics and art.
Kavita soon attained fame and recognition across India at the high school level as being a top flight performer in classical dances and won a continuous stream of awards, certificates and encomiums for her performances thus bringing immense pride to her school and city. Her high school dance career is filled with achievements including dance performances in front of luminaries such as Sonia Gandhi, President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma as well as invitations to international cultural society meetings in the USA and France.
Kavita’s passion for dance continued into her adult life even while she acquired her Bachelor Degree in Business Administration and entered married life. As her husband’s career in the multinational pharmaceutical industry took them on a 19 year sojourn across the world, she left an indelible imprint of her art, skill and grace across Asia, Europe and South America. During this 19 year period, Kavita not only staged great performances herself, but she took up full-time teaching in dance and trained many motivated students to carry on with the message of Indian dance in the countries and regions that she lived in. Kavita also broadened her own repertoire during this period by gaining expertise in Semi-classical, Folk dance, Bollywood, Indian Fusion Dance, Contemporary dance and the Caribbean dance forms Salsa, Merengue, Reggaeton and Cha Cha Cha. She worked in close collaboration with the Indian Ambassadors in these countries to promote Indian dances to the locals. Some of Kavita’s adult students have today started their own dance schools in Europe and South America and revere her to this day. Kavita also ensured that Indian Dance exploded onto Chile’s national TV by helping one of her students Lorena Gazmuri reach the final of Chile’s national talent hunt.
As Kavita arrived into the US, she saw the additional opportunity of blending all these dance forms that she picked up on her journey through different continents, to design a fun-filled dance work-out that is energizing, entertaining and educational that she has now named Bollyfusion. She is currently offering this innovative and entertaining dance workout in several locations within NJ for the past 7 years and her members have been consistently coming back for more of it.
Now with Kavi's School of Dance, Kavita brings her 19 years of eclectic international experience to the US, assured in the knowledge that she can impart skill, pride and confidence into her students as they journey through a world of dance.
